Jerome Powell is an American economist and central banker who has served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve, the United States’ central bank, since February 5, 2018.

Powell was born on February 4, 1953, in Washington, D.C., and received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Princeton University and later a juris doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center.

Before becoming Fed chairman, Powell held various positions in the private and public sectors. He has served as an investment banker at Dillon, Read & Co., a partner at the private equity firm The Carlyle Group, and a visiting scholar at the Bipartisan Policy Center.

In the public sector, Powell served as deputy secretary of the Treasury during the administration of President George H.W. Bush. Bush.

Powell’s tenure at the Fed began in 2012, when he was appointed to the Board of Governors.

In 2017, President Donald nominated Powell to succeed Janet Yellen as chair of the Federal Reserve, and he was confirmed by the Senate in January 2018.

As Chairman, Powell oversees the formulation and implementation of U.S. monetary policy with the goals of maintaining price stability, promoting maximum employment, and ensuring the stability of the financial system.
